Long term commitment to the communities around Kings Place is fundamental to the community of organisations resident and performing in the building. The aim of the community programme at Kings Place is to provide access to quality educational events, opportunities to participate in events and engage with and learn from leading artists and musicians.
The Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment's schools concerts programme at Kings Place is now in its third year. In partnership with Kings Place Music Foundation, the OAE offer exciting concerts to schools and celebrate the work of some of the children alongside the OAE in a professional concert. This year, Copenhagen, Brecknock, New End, St Andrews and Newington Green Primary are among the schools who will be visiting Kings Place for concerts.
Abram Wilson is one of the UK’s leading music educators in jazz. He has created, designed, and facilitated some of the most exciting and inspirational jazz instrumental and vocal workshops both here and abroad and is comfortable with all ages and levels from three years upwards. Abram delivered a series of outreach workshops in Somerstown, introducing jazz to students from St Mary & St Pancras Primary and South Camden Community Schools.
"I really appreciate you teaching us because we get to learn different things that we haven't learnt before and it can give us a career we hadn't thought of before." student from St Mary & St Pancras Primary
'I enjoyed looking at the building through the eyes of an architect. It was a completely different experience when you look at a building in a different way. And the building is BEAUTIFUL.'
'I enjoyed how the water sculptures linked to the canal outside the building. Also I enjoyed how in the auditorium the curtains can absorb the sounds that are made.'
'I enjoyed discovering and learning and looking into more depth and the reason why it is.....it has opened my mind.....it is one of those things when I can brag to my family to make me look like a genius.'
World Book Day
Guardian Education Centre and Kings Place Music Foundation celebrated the thirteenth World Book Day in March by inviting year 5 and 6 students from Argyle, Hanover and New End primary schools to meet children’s authors Andrew Cope and Michael Lawrence.
Claire Armistead, the Guardian’s book editor introduced Andrew Cope. who talked about Lara his pet dog who provided the inspiration for his Spy Dog Series. Listen to Andrew Cope describe how he was inspired. Michael Lawrence read from his latest Jimmy McCue book and told the children how he is always improving his work – even after it is published!
Children were then able to exchange their World Book Day £1 tokens for the special stories, written by the authors for World Book Day.
The KX Collective
The London Sinfonietta's KX Collective is an evolving group of young people from the Kings Cross neighbourhood, which forms an integral part of the Sinfonietta's programme of work at Kings Place.
Young people channel their talents and enthusiasm for music-making and production into dynamic projects and events that are showcased alongside the ensemble's concert work. We are so excited to see this group grow and to learn about the wealth of talent and energy that is on our doorstep.
If you are between the age of 13 and 20, and would like more information about the KX Collective, please call Tina Speed on 020 7239 9340 or email tina.speed@londonsinfonietta.org.uk
Concerts for the elder communities of Islington & Camden
Kings Place Music Foundation hosts Live Music Now's concerts for the senior community Songs & Songs. Seniors from day centres in Islington and Camden are invited to an afternoon of music accompanied by tea & scones.
‘We had a wonderful afternoon when we visited Kings Place. There were two superb sopranos one of whom played piano, and also a male tenor. I had no idea what to expect, however I was pleasantly surprised and impressed. We were treated to a cream tea and coffee in a very welcoming atmosphere!’ Sheila Bird
The historic narrowboat, Tarporley was built in 1937 for the Grand Union Canal Carrying Company. Later it became one of Britain's first community narrow boats. Tarporley now has a permanent mooring at Kings Place. Tarporley will be running boat trips from Kings Place during Kings Place International and Kings Place Festival.
