Cello Unwrapped

Travel to Kings Place

Aurora Orchestra – Resident Orchestra

Since its creation in 2005, Aurora has rapidly established itself as the most significant new British chamber orchestra in a generation, and one of Europe’s leading chamber orchestras. Under the inspirational artistic direction of Principal Conductor Nicholas Collon, Aurora combines electrifying live performance with a uniquely creative approach to programming and presentation across diverse art forms.

Based at Kings Place since 2009, and formally appointed as Resident Orchestra in 2013, Aurora has played a pivotal role in Kings Place's year-long Unwrapped series since 2011, as well as presenting successful collaborations and imaginative curations which have seen the orchestra work with Nico Muhly, Wayne McGregor (Random Dance), Leafcutter John, and Dawn Landes. Aurora is the youngest ever recipient of the RPS Ensemble Award and enjoys an increasingly busy UK and international touring calendar, with recent visits to Brazil, China and Australia. Aurora regularly performs at many other leading London venues, and has established UK regional residencies in Bristol and Bury St Edmunds.

Guided by the conviction that orchestral music should be accessible, alive and relevant to the broadest possible audience, Aurora’s activities extend to various platforms beyond the concert hall, with specially created programmes for schools, hospitals, museums and other community settings. In 2014, the ensemble launched Far, Far Away at Kings Place – a highly successful new series of multi-sensory, interactive storytelling concerts specially designed for families and young audiences.

The orchestra’s 2015/16 artistic season coincided with Aurora’s tenth anniversary, which was marked by a series of special events. Most significantly the orchestra launched a major new five year series at Kings Place in 2016, entitled Mozart’s Piano, offering audiences a once-in-a-generation opportunity to hear the complete cycle of Mozart piano concertos performed live by the same orchestra in a single venue.
