Jeremy Gardiner: Unfolding Landscape
Jeremy Gardiner’s paintings are effectively an artistic excavation of the geology of landscape: how it is shaped by human activity and the forces of nature. Aware of distinct geologies, he attempts to interpret the hidden subterranean realms that contain the marks and secrets of their own distant formation.
His artistic exploration has taken him from the Jurassic coast of Dorset to the rugged coast of Cornwall, passing through the dramatic American landscape, the roughness of volcanic islands in Brazil, the arid beauty of the island of Milos in Greece and more recently the Lake District and its numerous waterfalls. His paintings become a symbolic map, simultaneously interpreting and capturing the impact of human and natural events, the activities in time and space that have shaped, textured and coloured the landscape to give it a unique, contemporary depth and beauty.
Gardiner’s spatially probing and texturally explicit pictures creatively transform the lessons learnt from pioneering modern British landscape painters such as John Tunnard, Ben Nicholson, Peter Lanyon and the American artist Richard Diebenkorn.
