Cello Unwrapped

Travel to Kings Place

London Sinfonietta – Artistic Associate

‘If I were the British Government I would declare the London Sinfonietta a National Treasure... Long may they continue to make new music!’ Steve Reich

Kings Place has been London Sinfonietta’s administrative headquarters since we opened our doors in 2008. As one of Kings Place’s key collaborators, the ensemble has played a standout role in the Unwrapped series and Kings Place Festival each year since, becoming our Artistic Associate in Autumn 2015. Highlights have included performances as diverse as Messiaen’s Quartet for the End of Time, Riley’s In C and Schoenberg’s Verklärte Nacht, alongside one-off collaborations with pop band Micachu and the Shapes, the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment and Ugandan drummers. Kings Place is proud to support the London Sinfionetta’s education projects  by hosting regular secondary schools concerts.

The London Sinfonietta’s mission is to place the best contemporary classical music at the heart of today’s culture; engaging and challenging the public through inspiring performances of the highest standard, and taking risks to develop new work and talent. Since its inaugural concert in 1968, the London Sinfonietta’s commitment to making new music has seen it commission over 300 works, and premiere many hundreds more. The ensemble’s focus continues to evolve and now explores music of the 21st century, while using the second half of the 20th century as context. The ensemble is Resident Orchestra at Southbank Centre whilst continuing to take the best contemporary music to venues and festivals across the world with a busy touring schedule.

The core of the London Sinfonietta is 18 Principal Players, representing some of the best solo and ensemble musicians in the world. The ensemble also has an annual summer Academy while its Emerging Artists Programme gives brilliant professional musicians at the start of promising careers the opportunity to work alongside those Principal Players on stage. Their recordings present a catalogue of 20th and 21st century classics, on numerous prestigious labels as well as its own London Sinfonietta Label. Having held a world-leading position in education and participation work for many years, the London Sinfonietta continues this with a belief that arts participation is transformational to individuals and communities, and new music is relevant to people’s lives. The ensemble has broken new ground recently by releasing a participatory rhythm-learning app based on Steve Reich’s Clapping Music. It has been downloaded around the world.

London Sinfonietta’s Tim Gill: Avant Cello

Saturday, 6 May 2017 - 7:30pm /

For Elgar, Shostakovich and Britten the cello was a voice of heroism and lament. But how did other 20th and 21st century composers hear it? London Sinfonietta’s principal cellist Tim Gill presents a survey of pioneering cello repertoire though the 20th and 21st centuries.
