Anda Anastasescu

Awarded the decoration Commander of the Order of Merit by the President of Romania in 2004, Anda Anastasescu was one of the four women selected in the arts in Great Britain to receive the 2003 European Women of Achievement Certificate 'in recognition of an outstanding contribution to pan-European understanding and progress that provides an inspiration to others'.

Anastasescu was born in Bucharest. After graduating with the highest honours from the Bucharest Conservatoire she studied in Paris and London, and attended conducting masterclasses with Sergiu Celibidache.

Following her winning of the Debussy International Piano Competition in Paris in 1974 she has performed on five continents, with orchestras such as the BBC Concert and the European Community Chamber orchestras, the Salzburg Mozarteum Ensemble and the philharmonic orchestras of the former Soviet Union and Romania, as well as orchestras in the USA and the Far East. She also toured extensively with her own orchestra, The London Schubert Players, which she formed in 1989 as the orchestra-in-residence of the French Institute in London. She has appeared in prestigious festivals and concert halls and broadcast for the BBC, French National Radio and Romanian National Radio and TV. The British Council promoted several of her concert tours overseas. She worked with conductors such as Yan Pascal Tortelier, Barry Wordsworth and Sian Edwards, and has recorded for Electrecord in Romania and for Cressidia Classics in the UK.

In the UK Anastasescu gave a number of premières of works by Romanian composers Constantin Silvestri, George Enescu and Dinu Lipatti and in 1999 she was invited to première Lipatti's Sinfonia Concertante in performances conducted by Sir Yehudi Menuhin. She has been a consistent performer and promoter of Constantin Silvestri, the renowned conductor. Her performances at the Wigmore Hall established Silvestri as a 'composer awaiting thorough investigation' (International Piano).

In Romania, she founded the Constantin Silvestri International Festival, Competition and Summer Academy, and started the Silvestri Mini-PROMS in Bucharest. As President of the Constantin Silvestri International Foundation she established in the UK the Silvestri Scholarships - awarded yearly to young Romanian musicians to study in Britain; and organised educational concert tours for the orchestra of the distinguished George Enescu Music School from Bucharest, where she had been a student.

In 2005 - 2006 Anda Anastasescu initiated and was the artistic director of A Romanian Musical Adventure, the first-ever London festival of Romanian composers. In 2007 Anda and the London Schubert Players took a residency at The Crossing Arts Centre in Worksop, England, where they produced chamber music series, piano marathons and young persons' opera productions. In 2008 they launched Invitation to composers - an international project with a span of several years, with perfomances and workshops across Europe.
