The origins of the Sunday concerts can be traced back to the philanthropic Victorian Peoples Concert Society, which gave its first concert in Whitechapel in 1879. Since then, the concerts have moved to the South Place Chapel near Finsbury Pavement, from there to the much loved Conway Hall (from 1929) and now Kings Place. Since 1999 the concerts have been promoted by the London Chamber Music Society. The Sunday concerts are special, not only for the quality of the artists, their musical performances and the enthusiastic support of the audiences, but because of this astonishing history. New music has always been important; the Series gave some of the first cycles of Dvorak's quartets, the 1950s saw the premiere of works by Rawsthorne and all Bloch's chamber music. In 1965 a complete cycle of the (then) 10 Shostakovich quartets included the UK premieres of numbers 9 and 10, brought over at Britten's suggestion by Rostropovich. In addition the Series has from its inception attracted an extraordinary range of performers including amongst the early collaborators Arthur Rubinstein, Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, Percy Grainger and John Ireland.
