Mozart Unwrapped

I only have to think about music and Mozart comes to mind. As the great scholar HC Robbins Landon said, Mozart's music is ‘as good an excuse for mankind's survival as we shall ever encounter.' It has arrived in the 21st century just as fresh and ablaze with energy, wit, ingenuity and profundity as ever. Now is as good a time as any to delve deeper into that extraordinary body of work created in an all-too short life.

Mozart Unwrapped has been made up of 40 events over 2011, with a huge variety of repertoire. We've included everything from the earliest piano sonatas, the glass harmonica pieces, to trios, quartets, quintets, wind serenades through to piano concertos, some of the great symphonies, concert arias, the early opera Il re Pastore and ending with the marvellous Requiem.

The enthusiastic support of four great chamber orchestras has made the series a joy to programme and it's a privilege to have King's College Choir here to sing the Requiem. I'm also delighted to welcome a host of distinguished musicians to Kings Place, including Sir Colin Davis, Rosemary Joshua, Imogen Cooper, Martin Fröst, Nicholas Daniel, the Chilingiran and Dante Quartets, Leon McCawley and Kristian Bezuidenhout. Simon Keefe will no doubt be making the Study Days a fascinating exploration of the historical and musical contexts behind the great works.

Which brings us to Hall One: it is the sort of size of hall that Mozart was writing for, and I'm hoping it will allow the audience to hear every single note in an atmosphere of intimacy and warmth and shared interest.

We start on New Year's Eve with a live broadcast with Radio 3 and finishing with the Requiem on 19 December. I hope you'll join us!
