'Hommage to Nordheim'
The penultimate event in the This Isn't For You series, will dedicated to the Norwegian composer Arne Nordheim, celebrating his music, that of his Danish contemporary Per Nørgård, alongside some of that country's most brilliant composers of the new-generation. Now in his 78th year, Nordheim has been a pioneer in Norwegian musical life & his work runs the gamut from electronics to symphonies.
Featuring prize-winning Norwegian violinist and visiting Professor of the RCM, Peter Herresthal, for whom many of these works were written, percussionist Eirik Raude (Principle Percussionist for the Oslo Philharmonic); and the highly regarded pianist Ingfrid Nyhus, performing here on harpsichord, the programme for the event will include the world premieres of the arrangement for violin, harpsichord & percussion of Nordheim's 'Partita Memoria', the cadenza from the new Concerto for Violin & Percussion by Nils Henrik Asheim, and an arrangement for solo violin by Jon Øivind Ness from his violin concerto 'Madcap Tootling', alongside 'Scratch' by Rolf Wallin (performed on a balloon!) and 'The Gentle, the Penetrating' from 'I ching' by Per Nørgård. These works will be interspersed with the five movements from Johan Daniel Berlin's 'Sinfonia' for solo harpsichord, a rare Norwegian baroque work from c.1770.
The event will also include the UK premiere of Sussie Ahlburg's film 'Partita For Arne', a co-production with NRK (Norwegian Television) using Nordheim's 'Partita For Paul' as it's basis, and including footage of Nordheim from the NRK archive.
