Part of the Darbar Festival at Kings Place
Session 6
Concert 1
North-South Indian Percussion
Pandit Anindo Chatterjee tabla
Ravi Shankar Upadhay pakhawaj
A K Palanivel tavil
Prepare to be enthralled by an evening of some extraordinarily dynamic improvised percussion from across the sub-continent. Taking the cues from each other and without any rehearsal, these world class musicians from the carnatic and Hindustani traditions of classical music, stitch together rhythms that weave increasingly complex patterns at speeds that will leave you mesmerised.
Concert 2
Dhrupad with the Gundecha Brothers
Ramakant Gundecha vocal
Umakant Gundecha vocal
Ravi Shankar Upadhay pakhawaj
The Gundecha brothers are one of the leading exponents of this most ancient style of Indian classical music. Trained in the Dagar tradition by the renowned Dhrupad vocalist Ustad Zia Fariduddin Dagar and Ustad Zia Mohiuddin Dagar, they are among the most active young performers of Dhrupad in Indian and international circuits.
'They painstakingly improvise around the raga's tonic, dipping below it in long, resonant tones and then creeping above it, across a two and a half octave range. Eventually the tones shorten into shimmering staccato barrages that grow increasingly intense, suggesting rapidly plucked sitar notes.' The Reader's Guide Chicago
