Poet in the City – Artistic Associate

Kings Place and Poet in the City are both very proud to announce their Artistic Associate partnership in going forward. Since 2009, Poet in the City have made their significant mark by helping Kings Place establish itself as a new London home for poetry, having presented over 100 performances in fresh and exciting ways to a rapidly growing and loyal audience.

Headline celebrations of classic and modern poets have defined the partnership, with regular sold-out performances on the lives and works of poets as diverse as Sylvia Plath, Dylan Thomas and Samuel T. Coleridge to Homer, Edmund Spenser and Faiz Ahmad Faiz. These showcases have frequently required a live-stream relay to cater for demand, bringing dozens of acclaimed actors, poets and speakers to the venue, from Seamus Heaney, Carol Ann Duffy, Alice Oswald and Edmund de Waal to Harriet Walter, Juliet Stevenson, Bettany Hughes and Clare Balding.

The relationship between poetry and music has been a constant feature throughout, with electrifying events on Bob Dylan’s lyrics, Lorca’s Gypsy Ballads, and W. H. Auden and jazz, and this is culminating this year in an inaugural festival of ‘Poetry & Lyrics’. Meanwhile, a new relationship with Kings Place resident the Aurora Orchestra is opening up exciting possibilities for exploring how poetry and classical music interlink – with performances delving into the worlds of poetic and musical minimalism with Aurora’s Principal Cellist Oliver Coates, and a major celebration of the impact of the fascinating post-1945 poet Paul Celan on music. The new Artistic Associate relationship with Poet in the City will follow in very much the same vein by offering delightful and inspiring unique poetry showcases that have been specially curated for Kings Place.

‘Kings Place has been a crucial partner in enabling us to seed a new scene for the performance of classic and contemporary poetry in London. Contrary to common expectations about the limited audience possibilities of poetry, Kings Place were bold enough to provide a platform for large-scale poetry performance, and together we have created a hugely popular programme with audiences regularly exceeding 80% capacity. In 2016 we will be hosting our first-ever festival, Poetry & Lyrics, which celebrates the deep connection between music and verse, featuring leading musicians and poets from Cerys Matthews to Chris Wood and Liz Berry. This is an important moment for creating new audiences for poetry, and we are delighted to be taking this step as we announce our formal residency here as Artistic Associate.’ – Isobel Colchester, Chief Executive Officer, Poet in the City

‘We are thrilled to be able to consolidate our ongoing relationship with Poet in the City who are such an inspiring and imaginative organisation. We look forward to continuing to build and support their ethos in communicating to new audiences through the wonderful world of poetry.’ – Peter Millican, CEO Kings Place
