  10. The Building

Following an architectural competition, Dixon Jones (National Gallery, Royal Opera House, Said Business School) was appointed as the architect for the developers Parabola Land Limited. In delivering the brief, they have skilfully brought together a major arts venue and creative hub, elegantly situated bars and dining areas including a waterfront restaurant, an excellent conference and events centre, and a Grade A office complex. In addition to being an iconic, mixed-use building, Kings Place has been planned and designed from the…

  11. Acoustic Design

Kings Place – the story behind the sound Background Kings Place is the first modern purpose built recital hall to be built in London. With limited precedent in the UK, Arup went with the client, Parabola Land Limited, and architect, Dixon Jones, to Japan, where a number of small halls have been built in the last 20 years. This helped to consolidate what the team wanted from the new venue - a space with excellent acoustics for a wide range of…

  12. Design

Features and Highlights Glass Façade One of the most distinctive design features of the building is the three-layered undulating glass façade covering the west-facing York Way frontage. This is a free-standing transparent surface made up of hundreds of very slightly curved sheets of glass, produced in a factory near Venice. As well as being a beautiful design statement, it has practical benefits; from allowing Kings Place to be seen and recognised by visitors from as far as Kings Cross station…

  13. Engineering

One of the great challenges of the Kings Place development was the stipulation that the building should rise no higher than seven storeys. Therefore, in order to maximize space on the site, a very deep basement was created. In fact, the basement is unusually deep and required a propped diaphragm wall 25 metres high. This created three usable levels of accommodation, occupying a depth of 17 metres. Thanks to the use of such innovative engineering by Arup and Sir Robert…

  14. Environmental Design

From the beginning, Kings Place was conceived as a building with excellent environmental credentials. The aim was to make a significant reduction in carbon dioxide emissions relative to other office buildings, whilst maintaining an excellent working environment for people in the space. Kings Place will generate half the CO2 emissions of a similar size office building - a reduction equivalent to 1,000 tonnes of CO2 a year. This was considered achievable due to the close location to a public transport…
