Allstars from far and near

Songlines Encounters like their music to have an unusual twist and some unusual instruments. The first group tonight brings the former and the second group has the latter. They are both hugely skilful and entertaining!
____________

The Madagascar All Stars are all soloists in their own right from different parts of the magnificent Indian Ocean island which has a unique repository of both wildlife and music. The group includes Dama, leader of the Allstars Mahaleo; accordionist Regis Gizavo; the valiha (Malagasy zither) player Justin Vali; Marius Fenoamby, leader of the group Fenoamby; guitarist Erick Manana and percussionist Ricky Olombelo.

The Madagascar All Stars are unique and spell-binding.

Be sure to come along at 5pm for a screening of the French-Malagasy documentary Mahaleo. This documentary illustrates the significance of Dama's band Mahaleo now celebrating their 40th anniversary. Even after 30 years of success, they remain deeply committed to helping their country’s development; their professions range from surgeon to farmer, physician to sociologist and member of parliament. It also explains the crucial role of Dama who leads tonight's Madagascar All Stars concert. Read more..
____________

The Yiddish Twist Orchestra evokes a period in 1950s London when klezmer and other Jewish styles fused with calypso, Latin music and early rock ‘n’ roll, including the twist – or the ‘der shvitz’ as they call it.

With a funky horn section including Lemez Lovas (Oi Va Voi, Shtetl Superstars) and Ben Mandelson (3Mustaphas 3, Triaboliques), the Yiddish Twist Orchestra is delighted to present guest singer Sam Lee for their performance at Songlines Encounters.
