Bach Weekend 2016: From Cöthen to Leipzig

Martin Feinstein’s acclaimed Bach Weekend has established itself as one of the highlights of London’s musical calendar and this year’s festival is the first in its new home at Kings Place.

Bach Weekend 2016 will feature the great devotional works of Bach’s Leipzig period juxtaposed with the secular instrumental masterpieces written when Bach was court composer at Cöthen and enjoying the greatest compositional freedom of his career.

Bach Weekend 2016: The Great Partita in D minor for solo violin – Catherine Manson

A performance of the Partita for solo violin in D minor by Catherine Manson, one of the greatest period violinists of our age. The majestic Chaconne which closes this work is conceived on a vast scale and stands alone as the most magnificent movement written for a solo instrument.

Perhaps the most remarkable single work in all the the four books of the Klavier-Uebung series is The Goldberg Variations, a set of variations on a short aria. Conductor and renowned harpsichordist Steven Devine will perform this wonderful piece and explain what it is that makes it so universally popular.

Bach Weekend 2016: Orchestral Suites – The Feinstein Ensemble

Bach was the organiser of a famous series of coffee concerts at Zimmermann’s Coffeehouse on Catherstrasse. Records show that orchestral works by Handel and Telemann featured at Zimmermann’s, as did Bach's own orchestral suites.
