Schubert Ensemble: Quintessentials

12 Quintets, 6 Concerts

The piano quintets by Brahms, Dvořák and Schumann are among the most popular pieces in the chamber music world, but did you know that there are dozens of other piano quintets by a huge range of composers that are almost never played?

In this six-concert series, the Schubert Ensemble juxtaposes six of the best-known and most popular piano quintets with six more overlooked gems which are personal favourites of the Ensemble. This fascinating survey of one of chamber music’s most satisfying mediums will give audiences the opportunity to hear well-loved quintets such as those by Schumann and Dvořák, whilst discovering little-known masterpieces by composers such as Korngold, Dohnanyi, Enescu and Fauré.

Each concert will begin with one of the Ensemble’s highly-acclaimed ‘Behind the Notes’ sessions, in which they will explore and illuminate the lesser known work, using live performance to strip down the music and reveal its inner workings. Part Two will be a performance of both quintets.

Join us for what promises to be a fascinating voyage through some of the most exciting and neglected works in the repertoire, performed by a group that knows them inside and out.

Schubert Ensemble: Quintets by Enescu & Schumann

Thursday, 12 October 2017 - 7:30pm / Music

Schumann’s warm, sunny quintet is probably the most popular in the entire repertoire. Enescu’s masterpiece on the other hand, written in 1940, was never heard by the composer, only being unearthed and first performed in the 1960s.

Hall One

Schubert Ensemble: Quintets by Martinů & Dvořák

Thursday, 9 November 2017 - 7:30pm / Music

The Schubert Ensemble’s six-part exploration of the piano quintet repertoire concludes with a pair of contrasting Czech works: Dvořák’s memorable Piano Quintet Op. 81 and Martinů’s seldom-performed Second Piano Quintet.

AUDIENCE FEEDBACK

‘The concert was absolutely delightful but what really enhanced the experience was the half an hour talk given by members of the Schubert Ensemble that preceded the concert ‘Behind the notes’. I have no musical training but was really interested in the comparisons made between the Bruch and Brahms pieces that were to follow.’

‘A brilliant format. If this doesn’t sound too pretentious: I think it set the standard for chamber music performances of the future.’

‘I liked what you pointed out about the two pieces in order to understand the purpose, the context and the complexity of each piece.’

‘Congratulations on the launch of your splendid new series – what a great idea! Marvellous repertoire and insightful discussion of it thrown in.’
