Martha Rose violin, vocals

Jools Owen drums, harmonium, trumpet, vocals

Marcus Hamblett bass, electric guitar, synth, tenor horn

On International Women’s Day, we present the work of two exciting female voices in contemporary folk music:

Kristin McClement’s striking debut album The Wild Grips has been steadily gaining attention since its release in 2015. She has performed across the UK and Europe alongside notable acts such as Benjamin Clementine, Sam Lee, Kathryn Joseph and The Weather Station. She has ‘a particularly soulful voice; very low and sensual, it washes over you and insinuates itself into your brain without you even realising’ (The 405).

Kristin spent her early years travelling the vast shapeshifting landscapes of South Africa, an experience that would leave a deep and lasting impression. She moved to Kent aged thirteen where she picked up her first classical guitar and began to write songs. Whilst studying Fine Art in Brighton she caught the attention of the local folk scene and after a handful of early performances was eagerly adopted into The Willkommen Collective.

Alongside artists such as PJ Harvey and Gillian Welch, Kristin is inspired by the songs of Nick Drake and Leonard Cohen. Her music reflects a mood of displacement, the feeling of being adrift in a complex world. But there is also a call for help and a reach for hope in the acceptance of our fragile nature. What ultimately holds her work together is its perspective – that nature is all powerful yet we will forever seek to defy it.

A debut album of gravitas and maturity... a songwriter and musician of depth and character.’ Folk Radio UK
‘An extraordinary collection of mournful yet beautifully crafted and poetic songs.’ Brighton Music Blog

Emma Gatrill
is a multi-instrumentalist based in Brighton, UK. Her debut, 2012’s Chapter I, is a poignant collection of songs based around her then-latest acquisition – the harp. Subtly accompanied by various members of Brighton’s Willkommen Collective, her intricate harp playing coupled with a unique vocal fragility drew comparisons to Björk and Joni Mitchell as well as her friends and co-conspirators Rachael Dadd and Rozi Plain.

Since then, Emma has developed her live show far beyond the simplicity of Chapter I; augmenting her harp and vocal with ambient analogue synths and drum machines using foot controllers, as well as introducing guitar atmospherics from label-mate Marcus Hamblett. Her larger-scale live ambitions fed back into the writing and recording process for Gatrill’s second album, Cocoon, due for release on 17 March by Japanese label Flau.

As well as playing solo material, Emma has leant her musical talents to Laura Marling, Broken Social Scene, Sons Of Noel And Adrian and Matthew & The Atlas.

Cocoon (is) a beautiful slab of skewed folk-pop brilliance.’ Line of Best Fit
Gatrill’s music sounds like it’s being projected across the heavens.’ Stereogum
