This fourth concert in this series couples one of Shostakovich’s most popular works with the joyous, exuberant sounds of Erich Korngold’s masterpiece. Shostakovich’s Piano Quintet was written in 1940, and was awarded the dubious distinction of the Stalin Prize, a cash award of 100,000 rubles often cited as the largest sum ever commanded by a chamber work. Like many of Shostakovich’s mature works, this quintet treads a fine line between public bombast and private sorrow. The crazed waltz of the scherzo and thundering opening Prelude contrasts with the deeply felt intimacy of the two slow movements, and the quizzical, ironic finale.
Composed nearly twenty years earlier, Korngold’s Quintet was written shortly before he moved to California to become one of the first great Hollywood film composers. It contains music of heartbreaking beauty alongside passages of dazzling virtuosity, his language embracing both his Viennese background with the influence of Mahler and Richard Strauss, and the rich, glossy sound of Hollywood film music on which Korngold was a formative influence.

The Schubert Ensemble’s highly-acclaimed ‘Behind the Notes’ sessions will explore and illuminate the lesser known work, using live performance to strip down the music and reveal its inner workings.

On Korngold’s Quintet:
‘the Piano Quintet here receives a reading that marries refreshing spontaneity to a notable architectural elegance These artists audibly revel in Korngolds taxing, yet sumptuously rewarding writing’. Gramophone
Korngolds Piano Quintet is an exuberant complex of song, rhapsody and contrapuntal mystery The Schubert Ensemble of London give it a vibrant virtuoso performance. The Times
