Otherwise known as the ‘Mystery’ sonatas because of the enigmatic woodcarvings that adorn the manuscripts, Biber’s Rosary Sonatas are the perfect showcase for principal violinists. These virtuosic wonderings, ever pushing the boundaries, mark the high point of the violin’s popularity in England during the 17th and 18th centuries.

Meanwhile Matteis’ own highly influential innovations and mastery of the instrument meant that conditions were ripe for the arrival of Corelli’s solo sonatas, trio sonatas and concerti grossi from Italy. These were eagerly received by English musicians who mercilessly bought pirate copies of the music from London printing houses.

Join The English Concert in one of their more intimate settings as they chart a course through this wondrous music.
