Play That Thing – Don Paterson & Tim Garland

Poetry & Lyrics Festival
Music, Spoken Word / Friday, 9 June 2017 - 9:30pm / Hall Two
£12.50 | Savers £9.50*

An evening of music from Don Paterson with saxophonist and long-time collaborator Tim Garland. Although Paterson has worked as a writer since the early nineties, he initially left school to pursue a career in music. He moved to London in 1984, took some lessons from the guitarist Derek Bailey, and toured and recorded with Ken Hyder’s Talisker, as well as a number of free improvisation groups.

He began to concentrate on classical and twelve-string guitars in the late 1980s, when formed the Celtic-influenced jazz group Lammas with saxophonist and Chick Corea sideman Tim Garland. Before disbanding in the early 2000s, Lammas had toured extensively in Europe and Asia, and recorded five albums, featuring regulars Christine Tobin (vocalist), Mark Fletcher (drummer) and Karen Street (accordionist), though over the years the live band featured everyone from Kenny Wheeler and Jason Rebello to Joe Locke.

A limited number of free tickets is available for ticket holders attending Don Paterson & PJ Harvey in Hall One at 7.30pm, please call the Box Office on 020 7520 1490 to book.

Don Paterson is the author of several award-winning poetry collections including Rain (Forward Prize 2009) and 40 Sonnets (Costa Poetry Award 2015). He has been awarded T.S. Eliot Prize on two occasions. He received the OBE in 2008 and the Queen’s Gold Medal for Poetry in 2010, and is the poetry editor for Pan MacMillan. In addition, he is a keen jazz musician and composer, describing the two disciplines as being ‘mapped to each other’ and enjoying the ‘double-sided signs’ that poetry creates. He plays in The Don Paterson Situation with pianist Steve Hamilton (Billy Cobham, Bill Bruford’s Earthworks), Euan Burton (Jonathan Kreisberg, Salt House) and Alyn Cosker (Tommy Smith, SNJO).

Tim Garland is one of the UK’s most prolific saxophone players and a world class instrumentalist, having appeared across the country with Lammas and as a sideman. He spent years on the road with Chick Corea’s Vigil and has collaborated with renowned pianists Geoffrey Keezer, Jason Rebello and John Turville, and percussionist Asaf Sirkis, guitarists Ant Law and Don Paterson on his award-winning Lighthouse Project. In May 2016, he released his major new album One.
