Mark Lawson chairs a discussion featuring editor of Standpoint Daniel Johnson, Professor Peter Trubowitz,Times columnist and critic Ann Treneman and Washington Post columnist Anne Applebaum.


Anne Applebaum
 is a columnist for the Washington Post and the Director of the Transitions Forum at the Legatum Institute. She is the author of several books, including Gulag: A History, which won the 2004 Pulitzer Prize for non-fiction and Iron Curtain, which won the 2013 Cundill Prize for Historical Literature. Since 1989, her writing has frequently focused on the politics of post-communist transition in Russia and Europe, but she also writes extensively about British, American and European politics. She has been a visiting professor at the London School of Economics and has lectured at many universities, including Yale, Harvard, Columbia, Oxford, Cambridge, Humboldt (Berlin) Zurich and Heidelberg.

Daniel Johnson is founding editor of Standpoint magazine, which he launched in 2008. He made his name as a journalist covering the fall of the Berlin Wall, as German correspondent for The Daily Telegraph. He has been leader writer for both The Times and The Telegraph, as well as literary editor and associate editor for The Times.

Mark Lawson is an English journalist, broadcaster and author. Specialising in culture and the arts, he is best known for presenting the flagship BBC Radio 4 arts programme, Front Row, between 1998 and 2014. A Guardian columnist, he now presents Mark Lawson Talks To... on BBC Four and The Allegations is his acclaimed new novel.

Peter Trubowitz is Department Head of International Relations, Director of the US Centre at the London School of Economics and Political Science and Associate Fellow at Chatham House, Royal Institute of International Affairs. His main teaching and research interests are in the fields of international security and comparative foreign policy, with special focus on American grand strategy and foreign policy. He also writes and comments frequently on US party politics and elections and how they shape and are shaped by America’s changing place in the world. His publications include Politics and Strategy: Partisan Ambition and American Statecraft (Princeton University Press, 2011) and Defining the National Interest: Conflict and Change in American Foreign Policy (University of Chicago Press, 1998), as well as articles in scholarly journals such as International SecurityInternational Studies Quarterly and Political Science Quarterly and more popular avenues like Foreign AffairsInternational Herald Tribune and The National Interest.
