These three towering Shakespeareans who have taught, written about, directed and performed the greatest dramatist of all times, engage in a witty and illuminating exchange about why the pre-eminent playwright and poet is studied, interpreted and translated the world over, providing inspiration for new operas, films, plays, novels, and other works of art.
Stephen Greenblatt, Cogan University Professor of the Humanities at Harvard University, is the author of twelve books, including The Swerve: How the World Became Modern, which won the National Book Award and a Pulitzer Prize; the New York Times bestseller, Will in the World: How Shakespeare Became Shakespeare; and the classic university text Renaissance Self-Fashioning. He is General Editor of The Norton Anthology of English Literature and The Norton Shakespeare and has edited seven collections of literary criticism.
Howard Jacobson is an award-winning writer, journalist and broadcaster. His novels include The Mighty Walzer, Kalooki Nights, The Act of Love, Zoo Time and Shylock is My Name. In 2010 he won the Man Booker Prize for The Finkler Question. His latest, Pussy, is a satire on Trump.
Janet Suzman is one of the UK’s most distinguished actors. The pre-eminent American literary critic Harold Bloom has written, ‘Suzman’s Cleopatra is unmatched in my long years of attending performances here and in Great Britain’. She played the part for the RSC in 1973, much later directing Kim Cattrall in the role at both the Liverpool Playhouse and Chichester. She has performed in many other productions by Shakespeare, as well as others by Ibsen, Chekhov, Fugard, Harwood, Pinter et al. Working for Federico Fellini in E la Nave Va stands out as a highlight for her, as does The Draughtsman’s Contract. Suzman received an Academy Award Nomination for Nicholas and Alexandra and has won two Evening Standard Awards. A life-long involvement with South Africa, her birthplace, has never waned and she has been involved with many productions in and for that country.
