Time Unwrapped

Feature

Time Unwrapped is the tenth edition of Kings Place’s award-winning Unwrapped series.
What does music have to tell us about Time? In Time Unwrapped we show how music can stretch time, condense it, reverse it, organise it, atomise it, tangle with it and suspend it altogether.

Time Unwrapped will give you 50 different experiences of time, whether you’re immersed in Manu Delago’s Human Clock, swept up in Adams’ spiralling loops, the superhuman complexity of Nancarrow’s canons, the suspensions of Morton Feldman and Mozart, Satie and Pärt, the heavenly lengths of late Schubert or the eternal time of the Benedictine monks’ divine offices…

We begin at the beginning with Haydn’s Creation, and end with Messiaen’s Quartet for the End of Time and a New Year’s Countdown from Aurora Orchestra. Along the way we visit the seasons – of Buenos Aires and India – dynastic folk traditions with Martin & Eliza Carthy, Handel’s Triumph of Time & Truth and Grisey’s Vortex temporum. Discover how Einstein’s relative time had its correlatives in musical developments, witness how Monteverdi turned ‘old’ music into new and re-hear a concert with an instant remix.

With Hugo Ticciati as artist-in-residence, the series features Aurora Orchestra, Yulianna Avdeeva, William Basinski, Alasdair Beatson, Brodsky Quartet, Carducci Quartet, Chiaroscuro Quartet, Colin Currie Group, Imogen Cooper, Crick Crack Club, Iestyn Davies, Explore Ensemble, Feinstein Ensemble, Dame Evelyn Glennie, Thomas Gould, Icebreaker, Instruments of Time & Truth, London Sinfonietta, Darragh Morgan, Víkingur Ólafsson, Richard Reed Parry, Lawrence Power, Christine Rice, Miyoko Shida, Scottish Ensemble, Mark Simpson, The Sixteen, John Tilbury, ZRI and many more…

‘Music is the sole domain in which man realises the present.’ Igor Stravinsky
‘If architecture magnifies Space, music transfigures Time’ Gérard Grisey
