Rush-Hour Lates with Brodsky Quartet: Beethoven Op. 132

Concert III

Beethoven 250

Henning Kraggerud Preghiera
Beethoven String Quartet No. 15 in A minor, Op. 132

‘The Brodskys’ ability to communicate on so many levels – humanity and virtuosity all part of the essential integrity of their approach…’ The Guardian

In this special anniversary series, the acclaimed Brodsky Quartet perform Beethoven’s late string quartets, one at a time, lovingly set up with musical preludes.

This recital begins with a prayer, which violinist Henning Kraggerud composed for the Brodsky Quartet, a pre-echo of the famous prayer at the heart of Op. 132, written by Beethoven following a bout of intestinal inflammation. ‘A convalescent’s holy song of thanksgiving to the Deity’ employs an old church mode and breathes a mystic serenity. This is exploded by an aggressive march interspersed with impassioned operatic recitative from the first violin.

As Nietzsche wrote: ‘Whosoever has built a new Heaven has found strength for it only in his own Hell.’

Please note this concert will last approximately 50 mins and there will be no interval.

The Brodsky Quartet performed the ‘Cavatina’ from Beethoven’s String Quartet No. 13 in B-flat, Op. 130 at the 2017 Prinsengrachtconcert in Amsterdam:
