Rush-Hour Lates with Brodsky Quartet: Beethoven Op. 127

Concert I

Beethoven 250

Karen Tanaka At the Grave of Beethoven
Beethoven String Quartet No. 12 in E-flat, Op. 127

‘The Brodskys’ ability to communicate on so many levels – humanity and virtuosity all part of the essential integrity of their approach…’ The Guardian

Beethoven’s late quartets belong to a two year period of intense creativity (1824-6) following the completion of the Ninth Symphony. Stone deaf, seriously ill, the composer created visionary masterworks that would only be fully appreciated a century later.

In this special anniversary series, the Brodsky Quartet perform each of these mighty quartets individually, lovingly set up with musical preludes, here Karen Tanaka’s memorial At the Grave of Beethoven.

They begin with Op. 127 which shares its key and declamatory power with the Eroica, dissolving into a wistful, flowing lyricism. Six variations meditate on an Adagio melody of quiet rapture, while the quartet is completed with a darting scherzo and gypsy-inflected Allegro.

See all events in the Brodsky Quartet’s ‘Rush-Hour Lates’ series.

Please note this concert will last approximately 50 mins and there will be no interval.

The Brodsky Quartet performed the ‘Cavatina’ from Beethoven’s String Quartet No. 13 in B-flat, Op. 130 at the 2017 Prinsengrachtconcert in Amsterdam:
