The performance begins with the final work by American composer Elliot Carter, Epigrams. This series of witty, mercurial movements captures the essence of the eponymous ancient Greek literary device in musical form. From here, we rewind to the origins of the piano trio as a genre, with Joseph Haydn’s Piano Trio No. 40 in F-sharp minor, completed during his second trip to London in 1794. Shifting from the classical to the neo-classical, we hear Bohuslav Martinů’s Piano Trio No. 1, composed in Paris in 1930, a piece full of jazz-influenced rhythms and harmonies combined with brisk, obsessive counterpoint. The evening concludes with a cornerstone of the repertoire, Franz Schubert’s magnificent Piano Trio No. 1 in B-flat major. Composed in the final year of his life while gravely ill, it remains a testament to Schubert’s soaring lyricism, exuberant energy, and some of his most innovative harmonic and structural writing.
This event will last approximately 2 hours, including an interval.

About Trio Havisham:
Trio Havisham is an award-winning ensemble comprising pianist Zany Denyer, violinist Magdalena Riedl, and cellist Seth Collin. Renowned for their thoughtful music-making, their performances have been described as having “real flair, while never losing that sense of balance” (CAVATINA, 2022).
Having won the Musicians’ Company Award at Wigmore Hall (2023), they are now part of the Worshipful Company of Musicians’ five-year Young Artist Program, after previously being part of the Tunnell Trust’s roster of artists in 2023/24. The trio is also grateful for the support of ChamberStudio UK, who invited them to participate in three residencies at the University of Cambridge as part of the Hans Keller Forum (2023/24).
The trio has also achieved success in international competitions, most recently winning 2nd prize at the Concours International de Musique de Chambre de Lyon (2023). Previously, they were awarded 1st prize at the CAVATINA Intercollegiate Chamber Music Competition at Wigmore Hall and reached the finals of the Birmingham International Piano Chamber Music Competition (2022). In 2025, they look forward to performing as part of the 12th International Chamber Music Competition: Franz Schubert and Modern Music in Graz, Austria.
The trio is grateful to have received numerous opportunities for masterclasses and coachings with esteemed musicians over the past few years, including Petr Prause (Talich Quartet), So-Ock Kim, Takács Quartet, Robert Levin, David Waterman (Endellion Quartet), Wu Qian (Sitkovetsky Trio), Carole Presland, Matthew Jones, Alasdair Beatson, Richard Ireland, John Myerscough (Doric Quartet), Ralf Gothoni, Trio Karénine, the Gould Piano Trio, Jeremy Young, Donald Grant (Elias String Quartet), Leonard Elschenbroich, Hannah Roberts, Yair Kless, Michael Dussek and James Bailieu.
A particular passion of Trio Havisham lies in exploring the rarely performed trios of Bohuslav Martinů. In 2023, they recorded his 1st Piano Trio, ‘Cinq pièces brèves’, for the Abbey Road Institute.
Zany and Seth are currently pursuing advanced studies at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, as Artist Diploma and Postgraduate students, respectively, whilst Magdalena is studying for a Professional Diploma at the Royal Academy of Music. During their previous studies together at the Royal Northern College of Music, where the ensemble originally formed, they were awarded the Christopher Rowland Ensemble of the Year Prize. Magdalena plays a violin by Enrico Ceruti, generously loaned to her through Beare’s International Violin Society.
