Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment – Singing Through Time and Space

Bach, the Universe & Everything

JS Bach Cantata, Mein Gott, wie lang, ach lange BWV 155

with Dr Edward Breen of The City Literary Institute.

The Music:
In this cantata of longing, Bach deploys an array of instruments including the bassoon and the voice to articulate deep emotion, anguish, suffering, loss and glimpses of illusory joy.

The Science:
Using modern vibrato mapping techniques and the voices of the OAE’s Rising Stars, Dr Edward Breen demonstrates how singers have adapted their voices and techniques throughout history to keep pace with not only the evolution of orchestral instruments but with the expansion of the concert hall as well.
