Gabriela Montero stands out in the classical music world not only as a world-class pianist, improviser and now composer but as an artist with the courage to speak out against injustice and the first Honorary Consul for Amnesty International.

At the heart of this powerful programme from the Scottish Ensemble is her new work for piano and string orchestra Babel, co-commissioned by Kings Place, a colourful and inventive portrait of her experience as human rights activist as she tries to be heard in a world which wants only to talk, not listen.

Montero’s voice is joined by others, from Barshai’s arrangement of Shostakovich’s Tenth String Quartet – a heartfelt response to the crushing Soviet regime – Dobrinka Tabakova’s sensuous string dialogues Such Different Paths, to Messiaen’s astonishing invocation of heaven, written during his time in a German prisoner of war camp.
