Nature Unwrapped & Luminate

NYX; electronic drone choir, and composer Christina Vantzou present a new, breathing symphony for electronics and the voice inspired by symbiosis in the natural world.  NYX and Vantzou will create unique compositions, feeding live vocals through modular synths, letting organic and digital information entwine and unfold over time.  In this embodied ambient performance, the choir explores the deep structural patterns of nature through music.

Christina Vantzou is a Kansas City, Missouri native of Greek descent who resides in Brussels, Belgium.  A composer & experimental filmmaker, she works with space, sound, and image on a level of curiosity and refinement. Over the course of fifteen years she has built an audiovisual language very much her own.  Vantzou has composed and released four albums of ambient-classical music on Kranky and has developed a form of graphic musical notation influenced by abstract minimalists.  Her many collaborations have included performing with Mark Linkous (Sparklehorse), co-founding The Dead Texan, creating surreal videos/abstract films and performing with ensembles across 4 continents.

Supported by Arts Council England

NYX is a collaborative drone choir and otherworldly electric chorus, re-embodying live electronics and extended vocal techniques.

With visceral arrangements and original compositions by choir leader Sian O’Gorman, NYX looks to reshape the role of the traditional female choir, testing the limits of organic and synthetic modulation to explore the entire spectrum of collective female voice as an instrument.

Since October 2018, NYX has commissioned collaborative projects with Hatis Noit, Gazelle Twin, Iona Fortune and Alicia Jane Turner under the creative direction of Sian O’Gorman, Philippa Neels and Joshua Thomas.

Please note, the original date for this event was Friday 27 March 2020. Due to the Coronavirus outbreak, this event had to be postponed. Read our full statement.

About Luminate

In this open-ended series we shine a light into the crucible of new music creation today, revealing exhilarating cross-currents in sound and style through boundary-breaking, visceral performances.

From contemporary orchestral composition to shimmering electronic sound worlds, musical expression is becoming less defined by genre, more framed by its emotional and cultural contexts. Luminate taps into this bold, exploratory landscape in a series of shows that will provoke and inspire.

The third season starting January 2020 is brought to you in association with Spitfire Audio.
