We are delighted to welcome the legendary Peter Zummo to Kings Place with an incredible ensemble, including Peter Broderick (Efterklang), label mate and experimental cellist Mabe Fratti, and Joe Carvell of Pink Shabab.

Coming from the interdisciplinary avant-garde of New York City’s downtown scene, Zummo’s work over the years with Arthur Russell, Love of Life orchestra, Flying Hearts, and Lounge Lizards saw him create a style that he wryly termed ‘minimalism plus a whole lot more’.

Pitchfork have previously called Zummo’s trombone work ‘peerless’ and have described his music as ‘the sound of sublimity…that sends shivers down the nervous system.’

In Sept 2019 Zummo released his latest album, Deep Drive, on new Tin Angel Records imprint Unheard Of Hope. Across the five tracks of Deep Drive, Zummo refines the work he describes as ‘composition of and for ensemble’ with five, very different musicians.

Along with old friends bassist Ernie Brooks and percussionist Bill Ruyle, Zummo plays with three new collaborators on Deep Drive: turntablist Keith McIvor (aka JD Twitch of Optimo), electronic producer and trombonist Ralph Cumbers (aka Bass Clef), and cellist Oliver Coates; a sextet merging Zummo’s ‘open form’ composition and performance techniques with electronic and live instrumentation, vocal processing, collage and spoken word.

In addition to performing his own compositions and leading his own ensembles, Zummo has worked with myriad bands, orchestras, composers and musicians. His celebrated trombone style is recognized as one of the most beloved features of Arthur Russell’s sound, for whom he played and collaborated with in the recording studio.

War-torn industrial, experimental r&b, and visceral ambience are unified under the banner of Military Genius, an audiovisual project that mirrors the political and existential turmoil of our times. Spreading a message of peace amidst the turbulence, Military Genius blends rigid composition and free-form noise, producing abstract, meditative representations of real-life experience.

Compiled over 4 years while performing with such acts as N0V3L, Crack Cloud, and Blanka, the first Military Genius record was entirely written, recorded and produced by Bryce Hildebrand and represents an ambitious new point of departure that expands upon previous collaborative works.
