Alela Diane

Performing with her father, Tom Menig

+ Support from Leonie Evans

‘Her thoughtful, dreamy vocals drift across a grand piano, providing both pretty and wistful songs with emotional wallop.’ ★★★★ Guardian

Join the critically acclaimed songwriter Alela Diane for an intimate performance in Hall One. Diane will play as a duo with her father, Tom Menig, performing a mixture of old songs and more recent works.

‘My first memories are of falling asleep to the sound of my father’s guitar in the kitchen. I taught myself to play the instrument through song writing when I was 19, and still come back to those familiar finger picked styles when I write. I come from a little pine-tree filled gold mining town called Nevada City, California, but Portland, Oregon has been home for twelve years. Early recordings were made in 2003, while going to college in San Francisco, and I have been releasing albums every few years since. I’ve toured all over the UK and Europe, and have driven circles around the vast United States enough times to know better. I write about life, about love, about loss, I’ve dreamt songs, and I’ve been painfully nostalgic in verse. I’ve tried many sounds: stripped down acoustic to full band and back to basics again. I’ve learned a lot about my voice over the years, and it’s grown and changed with me, for which, I am grateful.

My fifth solo record, Cusp, was recorded while pregnant with my second daughter.

I look forward to sharing it with you.’

‘Like nothing else I’ve ever heard in my life, I was just blown away by her’ Cerys Matthews, BBC Radio 6 2016

‘Jazz and Folk flirt en route to New Orleans via Canterbury with Evans’ slinky, supple vocal…One slot on Later with Jools holland is all it would take’ Prog Magazine

Leonie Evans began performing at the age of 5 and has never stopped…. Her never ending tour has brought her to the furthest reaches of Britain, Europe, Japan and beyond. What sets Evans apart from just a discography and list of tour dates are the countless guest vocals, collaborations, spontaneous jams at parties and festivals and, perhaps most precious of all, the sprawling web of connections growing between Leonie and her ever-expanding family of musical sisters and brothers.

Her output to date has included two exquisite albums of dreamy, jazzy, unclassifiable song craft as part of the Bristol-based quartet Rae, a series of limited edition solo CDs, and an ecstatically received album Collaborations Volume 1, recorded in nine different locations and featuring thirty four guest musicians from across the UK and volume 2 is out later in the year with musicians from across the globe this time.
