The Ragging of Time celebrates 100 years of jazz history in a dizzying musical kaleidoscope that spirals from New Orleans to contemporary free jazz, taking in everything that lies between. In a work originally commissioned by the Marsden Jazz Festival, Simon Fell constructs time-tunnels between earlier periods in the history of jazz and the most recent developments in improvisation and instrumental abstraction. For Time Unwrapped, he presents a new quintet version of this dazzling jazz panorama.
‘The music draws jazz, free improvisation and post-serial composition into the same gravitational field, where they hybridise and mutate.’ The Wire
‘Simon is such a fantastic player and composer… he’s done this amazing thing where he has actually made the music travel in time. To hear it is a very physically exciting experience.’ Ian McMillan, BBC Radio 3
