Making News Shows

How should you format a news podcast? What pitfalls can you avoid when starting out a topical news show? How does hosting a news programme compare to formatting for comedy or entertainment?

For answers to these questions and more, join this fun and accessible session. You’ll hear stories and learn tricks from Nate Lanxon, a technology journalist for more than 12 years and a podcaster for even longer. Nate currently creates podcasts for Bloomberg, where he works as a reporter and editor. Previously he created and hosted podcasts for Wired magazine, and earlier still for CNET.com. Today he runs the Webby Award-nominated Tech’s Message, in addition to his work as a full-time journalist.

In this session, you’ll also hear how to tackle issues such as:

• What happens when it’s a slow news week and you’re short on ideas?
• What happens when you publish something that’s incorrect?
• How important is the editing process in news?
• What’s the 5-second rule?
• How do you do a news podcast as a live event?
• How do you involve a live chat room while you record?
• Can you salvage a terrible or failed interview and still make it usable in a show?
• What’s the best technical setup to record interviews for news programming?
• How do you find an audience?
• Should you entertain as well as inform?
• And more besides!
