Craig Brown: A Voyage Around the Queen

Jewish Book Week 2025

Speaker Craig Brown
Chair Sam Leith

Envied by Andy Warhol, resented by Jackie Kennedy, awed by Michelle Obama… Craig Brown observes The Queen in her time via the accounts by well-known figures who met her over the decades she reigned.

Anne Frank kept her picture on the wall of her annex; Virginia Woolf compared her to a caterpillar; Haile Selassie gave her a gold tiara. Queen Elizabeth II was famous for longer than anyone who has ever lived. Now the One Two Three Four author and Private Eye diarist Craig Brown makes his Jewish Book Week debut with the Sunday Times bestseller, which the Sunday Telegraph called “a very unusual masterpiece”. An unmissable hour with one of the funniest writers of our times, winner of the South Bank Show Sky Arts Award, the Baillie Gifford Prize and the James Tait Black Award. In conversation with Sam Leith.

This event will last approximately 1 hour, without an interval.

About the speaker:

Craig Brown has been writing the parodic celebrity diary for Private Eye since 1989. He has written for a rich variety of publications, including the Daily Mail, the New York Review of Books, the New Statesman, The Guardian and the Spectator. His books include the New York Times bestseller One on One; One Two Three Four: The Beatles in Time, which won the Baillie Gifford Prize for Non-Fiction; and Ma’am Darling: 99 Glimpses of Princess Margaret, which won the James Tait Black Award and The South Bank Show Sky Arts Award and was Shortlisted for the National Book Critics Circle Award in the US.

Sam Leith is Literary Editor of the Spectator. He has also written extensively for The Guardian, TLS, Financial Times, Telegraph and Daily Mail, and was a judge for the 2015 Man Booker Prize. His previous books include You Talkin’ To Me?: Rhetoric from Aristotle to Trump and Beyond, and Write To The Point: How to be Clear, Correct, and Persuasive on the Page.
