Anna Reid is a historian and journalist. She was The Economist’s Kyiv correspondent from 1993-’95, and ran the foreign policy programme at the London-based think tank Policy Exchange from 2002-6. Her Borderland: a Journey through the History of Ukraine was first published by Weidenfeld & Nicolson in 1997; an updated fourth edition came out last autumn. Her other titles are The Shaman’s Coat: a Native History of Siberia, and Leningrad: Tragedy of a City under Siege, 1941-44, which was shortlisted for the Duff Cooper Prize and has been translated into eighteen languages. She is a trustee of the Ukrainian Institute London, and currently working on a history of the Allied intervention into the 1918-’20 Russian Civil War.

Sir Malcolm Rifkind served in the Governments of Margaret Thatcher and John Major for an uninterrupted 18 years. He held four Cabinet posts including Minister of Defence and Foreign Secretary. From 2010-15 he was Chairman of the Intelligence and Security Committee which has oversight of MI6, MI5 and GCHQ. He is, currently, a Visiting Professor at the Dept of War Studies of King’s College and lectures, occasionally, at the LSE and other Universities.

She has taught the history of East-Central Europe at Cambridge, UCL, UEA and King’s College London and is currently the Director of the Ukrainian Institute London.
