Bach’s two sets of 24 Preludes and Fugues are among the greatest works ever written for keyboard and it takes courage to follow in his footsteps.
Howard Skempton has brought a typically individual and fresh approach to the challenge, creating a cycle of miniatures lasting barely 30 seconds each that are intriguing, playful and exquisitely crafted.
The London premiere is given by their dedicatee William Howard, who has collaborated with Skempton for over 30 years. Alongside works by Schubert and Bach, William Howard also performs Skempton’s atmospheric Reflections, inspired by 19th century photographs of Norfolk.
