‘This ensemble is without a doubt a trailblazer for the authentic performance of High Classical chamber music’ Gramophone
Count Waldstein predicted that Beethoven would ‘receive the spirit of Mozart from Haydn’s hands,’ but that spirit was already aflame in him before he arrived Vienna.
In this concert, the celebrated Chiaroscuro Quartet are joined by leading fortepianist Kristian Bezuidenhout to explore the influence of Mozart on Beethoven’s early work. Opening with the ever-fresh serenade, Eine Kleine Nachtmusik, they go on to Beethoven’s first Op. 18 quartets, an inspired summation of classical principles.
Bezuidenhout takes the stage for Mozart’s darkly beautiful C minor Piano sonata, a key so dear to Beethoven, and joins the quartet for the quintet version of the glorious Piano Concerto, K414.
