The status of the cello in 18th century London rose to new heights thanks to an influx of Italian cellist-composers. The cello became the centrepoint of family portraits, while the Prince of Wales set a new fashion for sponsoring aspiring cellists.
Christophe Coin returns with Maggie Cole for a colourful programme of Baroque Italian sonatas, some of which would have been performed by 19th century virtuoso Alfredo Piatti, another Italian emigrant beloved of the British public. Coin explores the music of this celebrated cellist, composer and collector, including his spectacular Caprice on Pacini’s Niobe. Soprano Ruby Hughes joins them for Piatti’s exquisite songs with cello. A rare glimpse into London’s chamber music life in the 18th and 19th centuries.
