Tenor Mark Padmore joins us for a fascinating journey back in time, as composers find inspiration in the music of their antecedents.
Corelli’s Adagio from Concerto Grosso Op. 6/2 forms the basis of Tippett’s moving masterpiece Fantasia Concertante on a Theme of Corelli. The songs of Dowland were Britten’s model for his Lachrymae, while John Woolrich’s Ulysses Awakes is a powerful and moving reimagining of arias from Monteverdi’s Il ritorno d’Ulisse. To complete the programme is Britten’s indelible masterpiece, Nocturne for tenor, seven obligato instruments and strings, which looks back to his own Serenade for tenor, horn and strings.
The fourth concert of the ECO’s star-studded series at Kings Place.
