In his mesmerising Svyati, Tavener bestowed the role of priest or ‘Ikon of Christ’ on the cello, which intones long chant-like stanzas at a distance from the choir, creating a dialogue of radiant intensity. Vasks’s Plainscapesevokes the beauty and birdsong of the Latvian plains with cello, violin and choir, ‘a place where one can see the horizon and look at the stars in the sky’.
Protegé of Anne-Sophie Mutter and soloist with the West Eastern Diwan Orchestra, Kian Soltani joins Hugo Ticciati and VOCES8 for an exquisite choral-instrumental sequence.
