Schumann’s cello concerto is unique in its balance of classical transparency and soulful expressivity, heroic ambition and poignant intimacy. Captivating young cellist, Laura van der Heijden, who rose to fame when she won the title of BBC Young Musician in 2012, joins the Academy of St Martin in the Fields for a version of the concerto with strings, in a programme framed by two delectable serenades.
Laura will join the ensemble also for the performance a new work written for her by Tim Watts of Cambridge University, where she is now a student.
‘Incredible creative intensity’ BBC Radio 3
‘The beauty of Laura van der Heijden’s playing lies in the fact that she has a wonderful expressivity, but never, ever overdoes it.’ Bachtrack
