The internationally renowned Chiaroscuro Quartet perform one of Haydn’s best-loved quartets from the Op. 76 set, and music by Franz Berwald, one of Sweden’s most famous composers, born the year before Schubert. His third quartet, composed in 1849, is a superb example of mid-nineteenth century romanticism. The concert ends with one of the pinnacles of the quartet repertoire, Beethoven’s late quartet in C-sharp minor, a work that seems to transcend music itself.
