Charismatic young Hakhnazaryan, gold medallist at the 2011 Tchaikovsky International Cello Com-petition, is in demand the world over. Here he presents a very personal programme reflecting his Armenian heritage and the Russian tradition in which he was brought up, Rostropovich being a mentor. With Rachmaninov’s best-loved sonata as a centrepiece, the programme takes in heart-stopping works by Khachaturian and Tchaikovsky, Khudoyan’s fiercely virtuosic solo sonata and Sollima’s Lamentatio, for which Haknazaryan will sing and play.
