In the second of our Bach Through Time recitals, Natalie Clein presents the fourth and fifth suites alongside 20th century reflections. She pairs the airy, mystical E-flat suite with Ernst Bloch’s sinewy first solo suite, inspired by Bach and written towards the end of his life. Bach’s fifth suite is played with the A string tuned down to G, lending the music its dark colours and deep seriousness. György Kurtág’s aphoristic pieces are the perfect prelude to this monumental suite, with its Sarabande of heart-stopping simplicity.
