Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment – Nature’s Hidden Nature

Bach, the Universe & Everything

Bach Cantata: Du Friedefürst, Herr Jesu Christ (‘Thou Prince of Peace, Lord Jesus Christ’), BWV116

With Professor Alexandra Olaya-Castro, Professor of Physics, University College London

The science: You’ve probably heard of quantum physics, and might know it’s about weird things such as tiny particles being in two places at the same time. But quantum biology? Professor Alexandra Olaya-Castro is a leading figure in this emerging field, which explores the role quantum mechanics plays in biological processes, from photosynthesis to birds’ remarkable navigation systems.

The music: This cantata is something of a musical sandwich, with flowing, optimistic first and last movements surrounding sections with darker moods of judgement and fear. It’s one for horn fans, with a prominent natural horn complementing the soprano singer.

Bach, the Universe and Everything is Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment’s very own Sunday service for inquiring and curious minds; a place to bond with music lovers and revel in the wonders of science.
