Classical music, by definition, is rooted in the traditions of the Western world, centred around Europe. Although the genre has been influenced throughout history by jazz, contemporary and traditional music from other continents, such as Africa, it rarely diverges far from its Western identity.
Therefore, there is a dismal history when exploring diversity within the genre as a whole. Black composers, conductors, and musicians are often overlooked within the classical music space. Black accomplishments are downplayed or erased, and people of African and Caribbean descent are severely underrepresented in scholarship, orchestras, executive roles, and even in audiences. Join this insightful discussion on the issue of representation in classical music. We know change takes time, but what evidence is there of the efforts being made? What can the industry do to empower up-and-coming diverse talent?
Key figures from the UK music ecosystem will join Roger Wilson, Director of Operations at Black Lives in Music, and a panel of influential voices within the musical ecosystem for this vital discussion. Refreshments will be provided after the session to continue the conversation.
This event, produced by Black Lives in Music, takes place as part of Classically Black, a day of celebration in recognition of the contribution of Black and global majority musicians and composers in classical music. Full day passes and half day passes can be purchased here.
