The six Brandenburg Concertos represent the high point of Bach’s secular orchestral writing. In his position as Court Conductor at Cöthen he at last had the security and freedom so long denied him. Because of this he was able to write works for many diverse instrumentations without restriction. The use of recorders and gambas in concertos nos. 4 and 6 harks back to an earlier age, but Bach also breaks completely new ground with extraordinarily original configurations and a revolutionary concept: the virtuoso keyboard concerto.
“I’ve heard the Brandenburg Concertos so many times, and in so many contexts. Yet what the Feinstein Ensemble did with them had revelatory freshness.” – The Independent
