Disniversity – Shrek Special!

London Podcast Festival 2023

Welcome to Disniversity, the podcast crash course through the history of Disney’s animated classics, with film journalist Ben Travis and animation academic Dr. Sam Summers.

Disniversity is returning to the London Podcast Festival! And once again, we’ll be focusing on a film that sits just outside our regular programming of the Walt Disney Animation Studios catalogue. This is a big one, folks: it’s finally time to address the big, green ogre in the room – a figure who looms large over the recent decades of Disney’s output; who punctured the studio’s sincere stories of princesses and true love’s kiss with fart gags, pop culture references, and an All-Star soundtrack; and whose disruptive arrival into the animation landscape sprang from a former Disney producer, Diet Coke devotee Jeffrey Katzenberg. Yes, let’s talk about Shrek, baby.

Join us as we peel back the onion-like layers of DreamWorks’ subversive swipe at Disney’s fairytale back-catalogue – exploring Shrek’s depictions of well-known fantasy characters like Snow White and Pinocchio, discussing whether the film re-frames or simply reinforces the traditional values of Disney’s features, and tracing how it changed the trajectory of Disney’s future for years to come. Plus: mud! Mayhem! Memes! And since Sam is the academic who quite literally wrote the book on Shrek (note: DreamWorks Animation: Intertextuality And Aesthetics In Shrek And Beyond will not be required reading for the show) think of your ticket as an £8990 discount on his usual university teachings.

Expect all your favourite features from the regular show – including Lasting Legacy and Dis-Carded – as we head out of the castle and into the swamp. Book a ticket today, watch the film before the show, and we’ll make sure the laughs keep coming and they don’t stop coming.

The podcast will last up to 90 minutes, without an interval.
