UK Conservatoires Present

Students from the four leading London conservatoires will present chamber music with guitars.

Miller-Bertolotti Duo Guitarist Merlin Miller and cellist Thomas Bertolotti first began working together whilst studying at the Royal Academy of Music with Professor Michael Lewin. So far, they have tackled a varied range of repertoire, from transcriptions of Bach and Janacek, to music by Gnattali and Assad. Recently, Merlin and Thomas gave a successful performance of cello and guitar music in Thomas’ own Hull-based chamber music series Intimate Classics in the City. Tonight they will perform Sergio Assad’s Jobiniana No. 4 and more.

Duo Villanesca are a London-based flute and guitar duo comprising Spanish flautist Ana Estefania Rodriguez and guitarist Peter Joe Bennett. They have performed regularly in concerts around UK and Spain at venues including Cadogan Hall, St Martin in the Fields, Cheltenham Town Hall, Ateneo de Madrid, Blackheath Halls, Greenwich University and Madrid Royal Theatre. Peter and Ana are winners of the Alison Stephens Competition and the Harold Clarke Competition respectively. They are recipients of the Colin Blythe Bursary Fund, awarded to support careers in chamber music and have been part of Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance’s Chamber Music Artists since 2015. Tonight they will perform Salvador Brotons’ Tre Divertimenti for flute and guitar.

Alma Guitar Trio Hannah Woollacott, Jonnie Cumming and Rowan McConkey have been playing together since 2013. They are currently studying as a trio on the Masters programme at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire under the tutelage of Mark Ashford and Mark Eden of the Vida Guitar Quartet. Alma are passionate about expanding the trio repertoire, collaborating with composers such as Sabino de Bari, Ryan Probert and Susie Self. Alma also produce their own arrangements for trio from a range of styles and instrumentations, including works from composers such as Vaughan Williams, Albéniz and Piazzolla. Tonight they will perform Paulo Bellinati’s Baião de Gude, Stephen Dodgson’s Follow the Star and more.

The Meraki Guitar Quartet consists of Will Scott, Matt House, Elizabeth Parkes and Kristian Richardson who all study at the Royal College of Music. ‘Meraki’ means ‘having to do with soul, creativity and love’. The quartet is interested in new music and enjoys premiering and recording new compositions. The quartet has played at prestigious venues such as the Royal Festival Hall and Amaryllis Flemming Hall and enjoys regular coaching with VIDA Guitar Quartet member Chris Stell. Tonight they will perform Saint-Saëns’ Danse Macarbe and John Duarte’s Diptych.
