Based around Naarm/Melbourne, CS + Kreme met at a friend’s day-party, leading to an alchemic studio session that cemented their collaboration. Over the past few years, they have released a series of records on labels that share their ethos, such as Total Stasis, Wichelroede, Efficient Space, Reel Torque, and The Trilogy Tapes. The latter has become a home for the duo, releasing critically acclaimed EPs like Cold Shoulder and howwouldyoufeelwithoutthatthought, as well as their 2020 LP Snoopy. In 2022, they released Orange on The Trilogy Tapes, which Boomkat praised as ‘brilliantly incomparable’. While Snoopy was described as ‘quietly seductive’ and ‘deeply romantic’, Orange marks a departure, featuring skittering drum programming, invocatory voices, and dubwise treatments, with contributions from British folk legend Bridget St. John and Australian composer James Rushford.
CS + Kreme’s music is fluid and meditative, often described as “horizontal-music” that incorporates heavy dub processing, post-punk elements, and chamber soundscapes. As Karmel notes, their influences are absorbed subconsciously, leading to a unique sound that defies easy categorization. Both Standish and Karmel have rich histories in experimental music, having played in groups such as F ingers, Bum Creek, Standish/Carlyon, and Devastations. Their collaborations extend to artists like Bridget St. John and Judith Hamann, who contributed cello to April Fools Day from their EP howwouldyoufeelwithoutthatthought.
CS + Kreme’s live performances have included standout shows at The White Hotel in Manchester, commissions for Rewire Festival in the Netherlands and Berliner Festspiel in Germany, and a 27-date tour across the UK, Europe, and North America in 2022. They also began a radio residency on NTS. In 2023, they continue to write new material and prepare for European dates, including prestigious events at the Bourse de Commerce in Paris and Rewire Festival in The Hague
CS + Kreme will be supported by Flora Yin Wong, an experimental artist and writer from London whose work incorporates field recordings and early instruments such as singing bowls, yangqin and kemence. In October 2020, her debut album was released on Modern Love records as a double LP vinyl. Prior to that, she released on Berlin label PAN on the ambient mono no aware compilation which she worked on conceptualising. Her debut EP City God was a tape on New York imprint PTP, and was inspired by the Daoist tradition of tutelary deities and the afterlife. Her first book Liturgy was released in July 2021 on New York’s Primary Information – exploring abstract fiction and non-fiction, interlinking themes like religion, modern mythology, paradoxes, and delusions.
