Please note, this event takes place at Coal Drops Yard, King’s Cross.

‘High-energy progressive brass’ The Guardian

‘Completely extraordinary’ Tom Robinson, BBC 6 Music

Perhaps Contraption is a multi-award winning, progressive brass band from London. Part choir, part chamber orchestra, part avant rock band, they create a truly unique musical experience; melding elements of jazz, punk, art pop and post-minimalism.

Their intense, exuberant shows won the Haizetara International Street Music competition (Spain) in 2014 and 2015, the judge’s prize at Cirque et Fanfare Festival (France) and Help Musicians Emerging Excellence Award in 2013. They are currently artists-in-residence at Snape Maltings creating a new live experience and winners of the 2019 LET (Les Enfants Terribles) Award for new theatre.

Their sound is something like John Adams meeting Frank Zappa and Sufjan Stevens in an avant-rock collision; staggering through a fairground – beautiful and astonishing. Replete with irregular but irresistible rhythms, big choral harmonies and triumphant horns.

They have performed at places as diverse as Glastonbury Festival, The EFG London Jazz Festival, Aldeburgh Festival, Bestival, Sudtirol Jazz Festival (Italy) London Roundhouse, The Royal Academy of Arts, Wilderness, Southbank Centre, Cross Linx (The Netherlands) Latitude, Artisti in Piazza (Italy), Buskers Bern (Switzerland), numerous Honk! Festivals (USA) and major tours in Europe with Amanda Palmer.

Whether leading jubilant parades, fully amplified stage shows, or pop up street performances, Perhaps Contraption create an unforgettable sonic spectacle.

For the second time, Kings Place partners with Cubitt Sessions and ventures into the local area, this time in the new shopping district, Coal Drops Yard. The full festival runs from Wednesday 24 July – Sunday 4 August, with 3 days of ‘Kings Place Presents…’ stages, showcasing just a handful of our diverse and eclectic artists, from world music ensemble Kabantu, spectacular sonic theatre with the Perhaps Contraption to high class cabaret and sultry jazz standards from the fast-rising Cherise Adams-Burnett etc. Join us for an electrifying live music programme in one of the largest and most exciting redevelopments in London.
