Julie Byrne

+ Juni Habel

Singer-songwriter Julie Byrne crafts folk music that feels like whispered secrets, her guitar reflecting her voice like a glass pond, creating beautiful and seemingly infinite spaces.

Julie Byrne releases her new album The Greater Wings, her first record in over six years and her debut with Ghostly International on 7th July. The new songs are universally resonant, unbridled in their devotion and joy. Byrne leans further into atmospheres both expansive and intimate; the lush, evocative songcraft flows between her signature fingerpicked guitar, synthesizer, and a newly adopted piano, made wider by flourishes of harp and strings. It is the transcendent sound of resource, of friendship that was never without romance, of loyalty that burns from within like a heart on fire, and the life force summoned in unrepeatable moments — raw, gorgeous, and wild.

Juni Habel‘s latest album Carvings was released earlier this year on Basin Rock (who put out Julie’s Not Even Happiness). A songbook of life’s lessons offering an expansive perspective as it navigates personal shadows between darkness and light.

Crackled radio-like transmissions from Norway’s rural hinterland, her fragile finger-picked lullabies warm themselves by the open fire with her rich intimate voice atop twinkling arrangements and strange percussive instrumentation. Like glowing embers in the dark, these songs are odes to life and death, the beauty of belonging and human kinship with nature.
